Hands on Tables 2005

Georgia Creimer

The installation "Hands on Tables" in the production and presentation premises of the vine dresser Winzer Krems is located in a strongly inclined connecting passage that is 30 metres long and three metres wide.
Five tables of an everday measure (90x120 cm) are distributed in even spaces along the length of the passage, while the table boards laid in white are used as projection spaces for one film respectively.
Each film shows an action that could actually take place on that table: eating, playing, cooking, people sitting face to face and holding their hands. Wine is served. Only the hands of the participants as well as all the objects immediately above the table top are visible. All the films are shot from a bird's eye view and are shown by the projectors hidden in the ceiling in such a way that the image on the table emerges in the scale 1:1; the films are uncut and are projected in loops.
The visitor's view is on the one hand voyeuristic: he or she looks over the protagonist's "invisible shoulder" and unhurriedly observes strange scenes. On the other hand he or she has the chance to identify with the acting persons: standing in front of the table's edge the hands he sees could be his own hands.

"Hands on Tables“ allows the development of an interplay between illusionary images and abstract two-dimensional panel paintings.
